I’m a horsey but too small to ride
I’ve a pouch to keep babies inside
My colors might changer
If I sense some danger
LINED SEAHORSE uses camo to hide
I was born in the Paleozoic
But don’t think that I’m snobby or stoic
My blood may be blue
But I sure won’t snub you
HORSESHOE CRABS are friends through thin and thick.
I look like a seahorse but I’m linear
And my body is longer and skinnier
Our eggs hang the the dudes
They take care of the broods
Does that make the PIPEFISH patrilinear?
If a sook or a jimmy you nab,
Beware of your fingers, they’ll jab!
I’m a beautiful swimmer
And summer feast winner
The Chesapeake pride’s a BLUE CRAB!
In submersible size I’m a cub
I’m small but I’m big inside, bub!
There’s no chance that we’ll drown
When we’re five fathoms down
Take a ride in me! I’m BABY SUB
My namesakes sing sweet songs so fair
But I grunt when I’m brought up for air
Catch me out in your boat
You’ll hear my croaky throat
A BIG HEADED SEA ROBIN is there!
High tide gives a tug and a tussle
Seabirds seek us and cause quite a fussle
We filter the bay
In our cool bivalve way
Tucked tight in our Beds we are MUSSELS!
A schoolyard’s where fun games are played in
But we travel in schools when we’re grazin’
So please give us some props
Cause we’re good for your crops
Natural plant food comes from us MENHADEN.
Hey you! Don’t be wearing a frown
Look up and you’ll see me around
My long face gives my name
But my pride’s not to blame
When I swim I appear to LOOKDOWN
